READING are plotting an ambitious summer raid for Joe Cole.
The Premier League new-boys are desperate to land a big signing to mark their return to the top flight.
And Liverpool midfielder Cole, 30, is one of the names at the top of their shortlist.
Cole currently has two years left on his £70,000-a-week Reds deal and matching those terms would be a problem for the Royals.

Joe Cole may well feel that he can find a ‘bigger’ club than Reading this summer but a move to the Premier League new-boys would at least have a better chance of offering the 30 year old a shot at regular football, something he can not appear to find at Anfield.
The England international has enjoyed a season long loan spell at Lille and if the Ligue 1 side were to look to make his temporary move a permanent one then the former Chelsea man may well opt to stay at the Stade Metropole and perhaps such a move would become more likely if Rudi Garcia fails to keep Eden Hazard at the club. The 21 year old Belgian is a much sought after property and Joe Cole could be a very useful like for like replacement for the impressive youngster.
Cole arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2010, signed by Roy Hodgson, and had a nightmare first term at the Merseyside club which began with a first day sending off against Arsenal and progressively went downhill from there on in. Once Hodgson was axed Dalglish appeared reticent to play the attacking midfielder who warmed the bench for much of the second half of the campaign.
A move to Lille has re-ignited the Londonder’s career and Cole has made 42 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals, and helping the Ligue 1 side to a third place spot, which crucially secures Champions League football for next term.
A move to Reading would cost Brian McDermott a small fortune in wages but would presumably not cost a great deal given that Cole arrived at Liverpool on a free and the club’s owners may be keen to remove his salary off the balance sheet.
